Bins fill unevenly. Material piles up on one side and leaves a gap on the other, and a single-point sensor reads exactly the spot where nothing is in the beam path. Someone walks over to check, or the bin overfills and material ends up on the floor. With a 3D Time of Flight sensor the measurement covers the whole bin area instead of one point.

Solution
Volume and peak height measurement within a defined area
We build this solution around the Banner ZMX series 3D Time of Flight sensor. It reads the entire user-defined area with thousands of laser measurement points and derives two values from it: the volume of material and its highest point. Where the measuring position is hard to reach or running a cable is not justified, a wireless pair carries the data to the control system - a Node at the bin and a Gateway at the cabinet.
The entire area, not just one point
A 60° × 45° field of view over a 200 to 2500 mm range also reads piled, angled or uneven surfaces, where a single-point measurement gets it wrong.
Two configurable outputs
Thresholds for volume and peak height are set separately, and the sensor's two NPN/PNP outputs connect directly to the existing control system or a signal light.
Wireless data transmission
A Node and Gateway pair transmits discrete and analogue signals over 2.4 GHz, with a Modbus RTU over RS-485 connection to the control system.
