Log diameter measurement on the debarking line

Light-curtain measurement for wood-processing lines

Each log is different — the diameter varies between logs and even along the length of a single log. If the machine does not adjust to this size difference, the peeling blades either leave the bark on or dig into the wood, causing losses. An incorrectly adjusted machine also wears out faster. WILL Sensors offers a measurement solution that determines the log diameter before it reaches the peeler and sends this value to the machine control, so the holders and blades automatically adjust.

Solution

The light curtain measures the log in motion

As the log moves toward the debarker, it passes through the beam field of a measuring light curtain. The receiver counts how many beams the log blocks and calculates the log's diameter from that. It passes this value as a signal to the line's control controller, which adjusts the grippers and blades to the size of that particular log. Measurement is contactless and happens in motion — the line does not stop.

Contactless measurement

The log crosses the beam field and the receiver reads the number of blocked beams — nothing touches the log and nothing wears against it.

Automatic adjustment

The size value reaches the control controller, which sets the grippers and blades for each log individually.

Protected equipment

When the machine knows the log's size in advance, it runs stably and the debarker is not overloaded by unexpectedly large-diameter logs.
