More durable sensor. Faster mounting. Lower total cost.

Why a mineral insulated (MI) temperature sensor outperforms a standard Pt100 — and when to choose one.

When a sensor lasts 10–20 years instead of 3–5, mounting takes 30 seconds instead of five minutes, and the internal construction prevents condensation — total lifecycle cost is lower, even when the upfront price is higher.

Two sensors. Same purpose. Different construction.

Both measure temperature using a Pt100 resistance element. The difference lies in how that element is protected and connected — and that determines the sensor's service life, accuracy, and ease of installation.

Mineral insulated · Pt100

Element: Pt100 Cl.B · IEC 60751

Construction: Mineral insulation (MgO)

Head: NAA/SUZ with spring clip (IP67)

Wiring: 4-wire · full resistance compensation

Max temperatūra: +600°C

Standard · Pt100

Element: Pt100 · soldered chip

Construction: Wires in metal tube · air gap

Head: DIN B with screw-on lid

Wiring: 2 or 3-wire

Max temperatūra: +250°C (atkarīgs no izolācijas)

What's inside: with mineral insulation and without

From the outside, both sensors look similar — a stainless steel tube with a connection head. The difference is on the inside.

Mineral insulated · cross-section

Densely compressed MgO powder fills all the space between the conductors and the sheath. No air — no condensation.

Standard Pt100 · cross-section

An air gap between the wires and the tube. Moisture can enter through the cable inlet and condense.

Detailed comparison

Parameter Mineral Insulated Sensor Standard Sensor
Temperature range Up to +600°C Up to +250°C (depends on insulation)
Vibration resistance Excellent — MgO absorbs shocks Limited — loose wires can break
Moisture protection Hermetic — MgO blocks moisture Air gap allows condensation to form
Flexibility Probe can be bent without loss of accuracy Rigid sensor head, non-bendable
Response time Fast heat transfer through dense MgO Slower due to air gap
Mounting time ~30 seconds (NAA/SUZ clip) ~5 minutes (DIN B screw-on lid)
Head type NAA/SUZ — spring clip, IP67 DIN B — screw-on lid, lid detaches
Wiring 4-wire — full resistance compensation 2 or 3-wire
Service life 10–20 years 3–5 years
Initial price Higher Lower
Total lifecycle cost Lower — less frequent replacement, less downtime Higher — more frequent replacement, more maintenance

Mineral insulated sensor advantages

MgO hermetic seal blocks moisture and condensation

Withstands vibration, shock, and corrosive environments

Probe can be bent and shaped to fit the installation

NAA/SUZ clip — mounting without tools

4-wire wiring eliminates cable resistance error

Kopējās izmaksas dzīves ciklā ir zemākas

When a standard sensor is acceptable

 Temperature does not exceed +200°C

 No vibration or aggressive environment

Sensor is in an easily accessible location

 Budget is the primary constraint

 Temporary or short-term installation
